Re-Action: The third f. Project exhibition

GOMA Gallery of Modern Art, Waterford

11/01/2025 – 09/02/2025

f. Project group shot, 2023

f. Project is a group of artists with a common love of analogue photography originally formed through a series of meetings while students at the Crawford College of Art & Design during 2017.

f.Project members embrace the particularities and vagaries of analogue photographic practice. Some members of the group experiment with eco-friendly and organic methods in the darkroom, some work with hand processing Super8 film, and others work in large format.

f.Project is hosted by Cork Film Centre in its darkroom facility at Sample Studios, Cork. Current members are: Artem Trofimenko, Chris Hurley, Dori O’Connell, Éanna Heavey, Evgeniya Martirosyan, Orla O’Byrne, Sophia Santabarbara.

Re-Action, GOMA Waterford, January 2025

The underlying theme of the f. Project exhibition, Re-Action was alchemy, This was approached in various ways by the group members - some explored ideas of transformation, while others stuck to darkroom experimentation and using alternative methods to develop images. The work in this exhibition spanned a range of mediums including photography, installation, moving image and performative pieces. Re-Action was exhibited at the GOMA Gallery of Modern Art, Waterford in January 2025.

Work for Re-Action

Found in collection

My biggest current project is coordinating the conservation of an exquisite collection of ancient, fragile plaster maquettes at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork.

Found amongst the crumbling saints and gargoyles were some strange, round, objects. These turned out to be moulds of someone’s hands in the same sort of
crumbly plaster.

I discovered that photographs of these hand moulds can produce a binocular inversion illusion, which makes them appear as three-dimensional objects, visually popping outwards rather than inwards. This happens in most people, but not in all people, and not all the time.
