Cork International Choral Festival 2023 awards

In autumn 2022 I was commissioned to make the national awards for the 2023 Cork International Choral Festival. Between the hard slog as I neared the finish line of an MA and other things such as the collaborative exhibition, Counter/parts at Backwater in October ’22, I worked on these awards. They are made of fused glass and ash. I worked in tandem with designer and woodworker Rory Drinan and Anthony Smithers at De-signs to produce what I feel is a pretty special object. Biggest thanks ever to Gana, who lent me her kiln and and her know-how and a beautiful place to work at her West Cork home. I love the thought that all fifteen of these awards have now found their way to new homes.

Each award is handmade from fused glass and salvaged Irish ash. Individually, they are unique works of art and together they join up to form one panorama-like scene.

The grain of the wood has been accentuated so as to harmonise with the five lines reaching skyward on the glass. And no Irish award would be complete without a touch of green!

It is my hope that wherever they are now, they will continue to bring joy and shine on in recognition of a great achievement.
